What's the difference between injection
molded and fabricated displays?
| Injection molded
displays are manufactured as a one-piece unit by injecting hot liquid plastic into a metal
mold. When the plastic has cooled, the mold is opened and a finished part drops out.
These molds are very expensive, sometimes over $100,000. and only make financial
sense if you are going to make many thousands of parts. The biggest advantage of
injection molding is that once the mold is paid for, parts are fairly inexpensive because
very little manual labor is required. Fabricated displays are made mostly by hand from material that comes in flat sheets which usually measure 4' x 8'. Parts are cut from these sheets then go through many processes before the final display is ready for shipment. Some of the processes include: cutting, machining, drilling, edge finishing, polishing, bending and gluing. Fabricated displays are more expensive than injection molded displays due to the amount of manual labor required to produce them. The biggest advantage of fabrication over injection molding is that no expensive molds are required. |
